Internship tourism - Overview

It’s pretty easy to see why travel internships are so highly sought after — you can visit new cities, meet new people, and take on the bucket-list your friends wish they could tackle.
Your internship in the travel agency gives you the chance to experience the daily working routine in our travel company in Kathmandu. Maybe you are planning to work in the tourism sector later or need an internship for your studies?
Help us with writing new programs, preparing Duty Roaster or vouchers or accompany guides on their sightseeing tours.
If you wish you can also gain practical knowledge by working in our hotels or working a few days there.
Of course you will get a certificate for your internship.

Daily tasks in the Travel Agency:

-          establish vouchers for hotels or transportations 
-          prepare Duty Roaster
-          accompany groups on sightseeing
-          write new programmes
-          prepare TIMS-Card for treks
-          if you want work on a reception of a hotel for a few days
-          pick up clients from the airport


Introduction days:

Day 01: Yoga Lesson, Language Class, Sightseeing in Swayambunath and Thamel, Welcome Dinner
Day 02: Yoga Lesson, Language Class, Sightseeing in Pashupatinath and Boudhanath
Day 03: Drive to Bhaktapur and Sightseeing at Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Surroundings, Visit of Changunarayan Temple
Day 04: Free Time, Momo Cooking Lesson in the afternoon 
Day 05: Transfer to your Project and Begin of your work there
From day 06: Work in the Project



Living Arrangements:

Start: every 10th of each month
Accomodation: Home-stay with local family
The homestay is nice but basic and usually has squat toilets, electricity and running water. You should know that there are often power cuts that can last for 10-12 hours (mostly divided into different parts during 24 hrs – there is an app, with which you can find out the time of the power cuts)
Food: all meals included
Minimal Age: 16

(Tourist Visa can be extended until 150 days in one calendar year)

Location (airport and Travel Agency): Kathmandu
Location (hotels): Kathmandu (Bodhnath, Bhaktapur), Pokhara, Dhampus, Nuwakot, Annapurna Region (on request: Chitwan)
Internet: Mostly There is internet at the accommodation, if not you will have occasional access to WiFi.
Laundry: Launderettes are available in Pokhara and Kathmandu if you want to use them or you can wash your clothes by hand as the locals

Internship tourism - Introduction days and tasks:

Arrival in Kathmandu (Saturday or Sunday)
A representative of our company welcomes you at Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu and transfers you to the host family. Today is no program, so you have time to rest and recover from the long journey.

Day 01: Yoga Lesson, Language/Culture Class & Sightseeing in Kathmandu (Monday)
Today in the morning you have Yoga Lesson and after breakfast language and culture class. You get to know something about the traditions in Nepal and learn little bit of the lanugage, so that you are able to talk a few words in Nepali. Your family will be happy!
After that you go for sightseeing in swayambunath
, the "Monkey Temple" of Kathmandu, a buddhist pilgrimage place  with a small Stupa. 
Then you go to Thamel a quarter in Kathmandu, where you find several shops, restaurant and cafes, a great place for buying some souvenirs or going out for eating.

Day 02: Yoga Lesson, Language/Culture Class & Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Today in the morning you have again Yoga and language class. After that you visit Pashupatinath. It is an important pilgrimage place for Hindus and a lot believers from India come there every week. There are lots of temples and at the shore of the holy Bagmati River, the believers burn there dead relatives. Then you go back to the big stupa of Bodhnath, which is also known as little Tibet. The stupa in Bodhnath is the biggest buddhist stupa in the world. You meet innumerable tibetan people there who orbit the stupa while praying. 

Day 03: Sightseeing in Bhaktapur and visit of Changunarayan
Today after breakfeast you drive to Bhaktapur by local bus. 
Bhaktapur which is located in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley is an ancient Newar city about 8 miles far from the capital city Kathmandu. It was the largest of the three Newa kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley, and the capital of Nepal during the great "Malla" Kingdom until the second half of the 15th century. It is famous for its rich culture, temples, and wood, metal and stone artworks. 
In the afternoon you will visit the big Changunarayan Temple and then go back to your house. Bhaktapur as well as Changuarayan are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Day 04: Free time, Momo Cooking Lesson in the afternoon
Today in the morning you have free time. If you want you can visit Thamel again or make a trip to Kirtipur, which is only about 45 minutes away, a small town from where you can see the mountains if the weather is good. In the afternoon about 16 oclock you have a Momo Cooking Lesson. Momo is a traditional tibetan food.

Day 05: First working day
Today you have your first day in the office. If you live in the house of one of our office staff you will go together with him to office. (by motorbike or foot). Otherwise there will come a guide to pick you up. 


Daily tasks in the Travel Agency:
- You can wake up at about 7.30 am have breakfast and then walk to the office in Basundhara (or maybe go by motorbike)
- You should arrive at about 9.30 am. 
- The staff of the office give you different tasks and you can always ask when you have any problem

-          accompany groups on Sightseeing
-          write new programmes
-          prepare TIMS-Card for Trekkings
- At 14 pm is "khaajaa" time. Everybody will meet downstairs in the kitchen, eat and drink tea together. It depends on how much work, but normally the break takes about 45 minutes. 
- Then you can continue with your work until about 16 pm.
- After that you have free time

Special: Combine your internship with work in hotels or at the airport
You can combine working in the office with working at receptions of hotels in different locations like Pokhara, Bhaktapur, Bodhnat, Dhampus and other regions. 
If you like, you can make your internship a few days at the Tribhuvan International Airport of Kathmandu

Your program ends on a Friday and you will fly home on the following Saturday or Sunday.
If you have any special wishes please don't hesitate to contact us. It is also possible to end your volunteering work with trekking or a roundtrip so that it is possible for you to get to know all regions of Nepal.

  • Personal expenditure: e.g. drinks, souveniers, laundry, snacks, etc.
  • Vaccination and travel insurance
  • Extra payment in case of illness, rescue, changes of the program because of acts of nature beyond control, and additional expenses for overnight accommodations, etc. resulting from this 

- Proof your insurances: Do you have a valid travel- or health insurance for Nepal? Do you also need a luggage insurance?
- Your passport has to be valid at least 6 months when you entry Nepal and you need at least 1 empty page
- make passport pictures (you need one for visa on arrival and other for Trekking permit)
- check if you have to refresh imunisations or visit a travel medicine doctor and maybe take immunisations against rabies if you work with street dogs or take malaria prophylaxis if you stay longer in Chitwan. 

- get visa in your home country or on arrival at the airport (until 15 days: USD 25,00/ until 30 days: USD 40,00/ until 90 days: USD 100,00/ if you stay more than 90 days you have to extend your visa in Kathmandu or Pokhara)
- make copies of your travel documents (passport, flight tickets..)
- check if you have a credit card like Visa or MasterCard with which you can get money from the ATMs in Nepal. There are also money changer everywhere where you can change euros or dollar in Nepali Rupees.
